Silkworms make an excellent classroom aid and we are pleased to offer kits which make their study both easy and fascinating. Each kit contains all that you need to study these large harmless insects so as an introduction to silkworm farming, lets have a brief look at the lifecycle of the silkworm.

Lifecycle of the silkworm

Silkworms hatching from their eggs

Young silkworms feeding on silkworm food

Mature worms having their afternoon feed.

Pupa in silk cocoon

Mating silkmoths

These silkworms are the size of an ant and have just crawled from their small grey eggs.

The young silkworms have a very big appetite and start to feed straight away.

After about 5 weeks, the silkworms are feeding 2 times a day and are now 70 mm long and about 10 mm in diameter. They are always hungry!

Eventually when they have eaten enough food, they build a silk cocoon and turn into a brown pupa within.

The silkmoths hatch and mate straight away. The female moths then lay 300+ eggs and the cycle starts again.

Not all kits are available all year round so please check that what you require is available. If you are having a problem with your project, let us know and we will be pleased to advise. All kits are fully email supported. We farm silkworms continuously and have a wealth of knowledge about their requirements and needs for successful breeding.
